It starts with a whisper.
It’s time for you to know who you are…”
Stange dreams leave her with very real injuries and there’s a dark tattoo weaving its way up her arms. The guy she thought she could fall in love with just told her he’s only half-human – oh, and same goes for her. And she keeps hearing a distant fluttering of wings.
Violet Eden is having a very bad 17th birthday.
But if angels seek vengeance and humans are warriors, you could do a lot worse than betting on Violet Eden.
(Summary from Goodreads)
EMBRACE was an entertaining read, but didn’t feel all that original to me. It felt a lot like I was reading TWILIGHT, but with angels – even down to the love triangle and the stalkerish behavior from one of the love interests.
I wasn’t a huge fan of the love triangle. I liked Lincoln and his chemistry with Violet, but I didn’t like Phoenix at all. In addition to stalking Violet and manipulating her emotions, I didn’t ever believe that Violet would choose him over Lincoln.
As I said, I didn’t like Phoenix, but I still found him interesting when he wasn’t stalking Violet. I got the sense that he’s very conflicted because spoilery reasons, so it would be interesting to see what happens with him were I to continue reading this series.
I liked Violet’s best friend, Steph, and how supportive they were of each other – I feel like there’s not enough supportive female friendships in YA. That being said, I did want to see a little more conflict from her; Steph accepted everything Violet told her about angels a little too easily, I think, and it would’ve been interesting to see Steph struggle to come to terms with it all.
I’m not sure I’ll continue with this series. I liked EMBRACE, but I don’t know that I liked it enough.
TL;DR: Twilight with angels.
